Here be some of me favorite pirate phrases:

I’m a love pirate and I’m here for yer booty!

Is that a belayin’ pin in yer britches, or are ye just happy to see me?

And a short list of me favorite pirates:

Happy (belated) Mother’s Day

Happy indeed!!

Jax and I went to Muffins for Moms at his school on Thursday. It went so much better than last year! It was just lovely.

A few people had asked Jax if he needed to do some shopping for me for Mother’s Day. His reply was “I’ve got it covered” or “It’s taken care of” which I thought was adorable and of course wondered what he could possibly have up his sleeve. Friday afternoon when I picked him up from school, he could hold it in no longer…he had made a pin out of pressed paper and a beautiful card. The sentiment he wrote in the card made me cry…I assured him they were tears of happiness!

I was greeted with a wonderful breakfast Sunday morning! Then we went to Medieval Times for a late lunch/early dinner! Bonus…our knight won the tournament!

The Red Sox vs Rays game was on TV Sunday night and they were swinging pink bats in support of breast cancer research. Bonus…the Red Sox beat the Rays!

It was truly a memorable Mother’s Day! Hope all of you moms had a wonderful Mother’s Day and felt especially loved and appreciated!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year…better late than never

Merry Christmas everyone…a very belated wish but still heartfelt…and I hope y’all are having a Happy New Year!

Christmas was a busy time for us…as usual.

Jackson’s birthday was on the 23rd (also his last day of school before winter break) so we made cupcakes the night before. Actually I made cupcakes for the after school care kids…his school requires all things to be store bought…so we bought cupcakes to share with his class. The night of the 22nd also brought a visit from Santa to our neighborhood. Jax and I had planned to go to Dave and Buster’s for his birthday dinner but a water main bursting in Bethesda prevented that little trip. So we settled for pizza and a movie at home.

Christmas Eve…I had to work and since Jax was already out for winter break…he came with me. The office closed early and we headed home to finish getting the house ready for company on Christmas Day. During the night, Jax had a seizure and ended up in bed with me the rest of the night. As usual, he was fine after the seizure…as usual, I’m not that lucky.

Christmas Day…I think I am one of the very few fortunate parents that doesn’t get a wake up call before dawn on Christmas morning. Jaxcan usually be relied upon to sleep until 8am. So I was puttering around upstairs waiting for him to wake up…he did and then we ventured downstairs to see if Santa had made a stop at our house…he did!

Here’s a rundown of the loot we received:

to Jax from Santa: Ben 10 Alien Force for PS2, Crash Bandicoot Mind over Mutant for PS2, Ben 10 Alien Creation Chamber, Agents Lego Mission 8 (super exclusive), Animated Transformers Rollout Command Optimus Prime, Bakugan stuff, Batman Pajamas, some other little things

to Me from Santa: 25th Anniversary Cabbage Patch Kid (25 years ago, I got my first Cabbage Patch from Santa – Leila Margaret…this year…Margaret Pollie), Electric Griddle, skirt, sweaters, pjs, watch, business card basket, some other little things

to Jax from others: board games (Sorry, Boggle), pjs, TriBot, Kevin 11’s car, Guinness World Records 2009 book, Electronic Drum Set, Microscope, movies, Agents Legos, Nerf Gun

to Me from others: DS game, perfume, pjs, CD, calendars, pot holders, digital picture frame, gift cards

to Us from Santa: Wii, Guitar Hero World Tour, Mario Kart

We made out very well!

Christmas Day brought my parents…my mom, my step-dad, and my dad (not as weird as you might think) for a visit. Mom and Ed couldn’t stay long as they had to drive back to VA (work, dogs, etc.). My dad stayed for a couple of nights which was really cool. Christmas night was pretty low key…playing with our new toys. To make up for Jackson’s missed birthday dinner, we took my dad with us to Dave and Buster’s for lunch and games. Most of the time with my dad was spent catching up rather than being on the go…which was very nice.

New Year’s Eve was spent in a Guitar Hero battle until the ball dropped at midnight.

Things have been going very well…staying very busy…being very happy!

Happy F***ing Mother’s Day

Jackson’s school had a breakfast for Grandparent’s Day, Donuts for Dads in March, and this month it was Muffins for Moms. His grandparents couldn’t make it for their day and Scott was out of town when they had the day for Dads. So I made sure that I could make it to the special mother’s day.

I got all dressed up, hair and make-up done, and called out of work for the morning. Jackson and I were going to have a special day, mom and son! Sweet memories of Jackson’s Kindergarten Mother’s Day Tea were floating through my mind.

Well, this one wasn’t going to be so sweet. From the moment Jackson got out of bed, he was in a foul mood. I cheerfully reminded him of the special mother’s day muffins breakfast. He replied, “I don’t like muffins” so I told him I’d pack pop-tarts for him to eat instead. I finally got him out the door…honestly I’d rather have to dress a stubborn mule and an angry crocodile while blindfolded in the mornings.

So, we’re on our way. We walk into the cafeteria. Vases of flowers adorn all the tables, baskets of assorted muffins are everywhere, juice is flowing, coffee is brewing, and dads are serving. It was really nice. So we grabbed some juice and sat down. I tried to convince Jackson that he ate blueberry Eggo Muffin Tops and there were blueberry muffins…same thing. He didn’t buy it. So I offered the pop-tarts again. He sat there pouting the entire time…arms crossed and face scowled. I glanced around at all the other moms happily chatting it up and their angelic children so proud to have the chance to show off their moms. Then I looked back at Jackson, I was embarrassed and hurt.

I cut the date short. I said let’s go, got up, shoved half a muffin in my purse, downed my juice, and walked out. Jackson shuffled behind, still pouting. I dropped him off at daycare and headed to work.

Was I blowing this completely out of proportion? Is it normal for a grown woman to feel so hurt and heartbroken by the actions of an 8 year old? I started crying and called my mom. She says it’s totally normal. Phew! Follow-up with my best friend…she says it’s ok too. Phew!

I feel a little better now. Jackson and I are going to have a long talk tonight. There will be tears and I will feel guilty, but we’re still going to talk about how we need to think of other people’s feelings and that we sometimes have to do things we don’t want to do and sulking through it doesn’t cut it.

Happy New Year!

Hope you all had a wonderful time ringing in the New Year!

I had the best New Year’s ever! I went to Ohio to spend a long weekend with my BFF, Anne-Evan! We had a great time, we shopped, we ate, we shopped, we had a million laughs, we shopped, we did some final touches to her new house, oh, and we did some shopping. We spent New Year’s Eve at the Springfield Country Club. Great food, great drinks, great band, great dancing, and most of all great people!

Happy New Year, Y’all!!

UPDATE…pictures:

We unwisely waited until after 4+ rounds of drinks to take pictures…oops

Merry Christmas!!

Phew! I did it, the whole Christmas thing, as a single mom. This is probably the toughest time to be a single parent. No hubby to stay home with the kid so I can run out to grab those last few things. No second income to help pay for those last few things. No one to help put stuff under the tree or stuff stockings and most importantly, no one to help keep watch that the kid doesn’t sneak out of bed and bust you.

BUT…it’s also an amazing feeling to know that I pulled it off on my own.

Jackson and I had a wonderful Christmas! Although Jax didn’t get everything on his list, he was impressed that Santa came through with some great gifts that weren’t on his list. My parents, Tommy, and Don came over this afternoon to spend Christmas with us. We had a great time visiting, opening presents, and eating yummy food. Ed and Don also put together the Air Hockey table left by Santa (not an easy feat, it took them 45 minutes together, can’t imagine what state I would have been in had I tried to assemble it alone).

Here are the gift highlights:

To: Jackson; From: Santa

Nintendo DS Lite, a bunch of games, an awesome carrying case, Transformer Millenium Falcon, Cyber Stompin Bumblebee, MagnaSaurus, MagnaFormers (not on his list, last minute purchase, HUGE hit…SCORE), a new suitcase, and a bunch of other stuff

To: Jackson; From: Mommy

Maryland Terrapins Sweatshirt, Sponge Bob PJs, Surf’s Up DVD, and a painting kit

To: Jackson; From: Family

X-Rocker Video Chair, Star Wars Legos, Nerf Dart Shooter, Justice League DVD, PlayStation 2, and some other little things

To: Me; From Santa

Sewing Machine, Jacket (except mine is red and black), Brown Mary Jane Pumps, Nintendo DS Lite, some games, Jewelry (diamond hoop earrings, 2 other pairs of earrings and a necklace), a new suitcase, and some other little things

To: Me; From: My Family

GPS (badly needed since I have a horrible sense of direction, I think my mom is tired of tracking me on Google Maps when I get lost…often), Backyard Fire Bowl (I gave one to each of my brothers and whined that I also wanted one, well I got one!), Perfume, ITunes gift card, an Advanced Reader Copy of Jennifer Weiner’s newest book, Certain Girls (it’s not coming out until April 2008 so this is very exciting!), and some other little things

Of course the most important thing about Christmas, and any holiday, spending time with family…check!

I hope that all of you reading this had a wonderful Christmas with your families, with much happiness, love, good health, and at least a little magic!
